So you’ve found the dress – congratulations! Your wedding dress is probably going to be one of the most important pieces you’ll ever wear, and preparing to wear it is key to ensuring you look and feel amazing on your big day.

Take a look at our five tips to consider before stepping into your beautiful gown.

Picking the Right Underwear

The foundation of your bridal look begins with the right underwear. This will depend on the style of your dress, so think about if there are cut outs, a low back, or sheer material. As a rule of thumb choose seamless undergarments that match your skin tone so they won’t show through your dress.

Bonus tip: size up your underwear to avoid bumps and lines where they can dig in. Most dresses will have built in cups – or you can ask your seamstress to add them – so that you don’t have to wear a bra. If you’re worried about going bra-less, have a chat with your bridal stylist or seamstress about your concerns as they will be able to make suggestions to help. It’s best to have your underwear sorted at the point of final fittings so you can check you are happy with the overall look.

Practice Putting It On

Wedding dresses often have intricate buttons, zippers, or corset-style fastenings that can require a little practice. You’ll likely need a trusted person to help you get into your gown on the big day. This could be your maid of honour, bridesmaids or family member. They will need to learn how to do it up before the big day, and it’s worthwhile letting them get familiar with your dress. This not only saves time but also reduces stress on the morning of your wedding.

We usually recommend having someone accompany you to your final seamstress fitting so the seamstress can show you the correct way to get you in the dress and also how to tie the bustle if you’ve had one added.

Consider Your Morning Outfit

Depending on the time of your ceremony, you’ll be in a different outfit for much of the day before your dress. Some brides might not give this much thought (there’s already a lot to think about!) but don’t overlook it completely.

It’s vital you’re comfortable. It’s going to be a busy morning with preparations in full swing, perhaps last minute D-I-Ys and set up shenanigans. Think about the weather, what you need to achieve and where you’ll be. Opt for loose and flowy materials, nothing that will leave marks on your skin. You want to avoid bra imprints and tight shoulder strap marks.

You will also likely be photographed in your morning outfit before getting into your dress, so make sure you feel happy and confident in what you’ve chosen.

Bonus tip: buttoned clothes help avoid lifting fabric over your flawless hair and make-up.

Let Products Dry

If you plan to use any products on the morning, such as body lotion, perfume, setting spray, or tanners, make sure to let them dry completely before putting on your dress.

Some products may stain or cause discolouration on the fabric of your dress. Apply your products with plenty of time to spare, or if you must apply some in your gown, you can use a towel or robe to protect your dress while applying these products to keep it pristine.

Be sure to do trial runs with any spray or fake tanning options to ensure you’re happy with its durability so that you don’t end up with any last minute hiccups.

Hang It Up

Once you’ve collected your dress and taken it home, it’s yours to protect! Keep your dress hanging in a safe, spacious area to minimise wrinkles. A dry space away from any sunlight is a must. Remember to use the hanging loops when storing the dress, especially if you have thin or delicate straps. Too much sustained weight could result in damage or stretched straps.

Bonus tip: don’t forget to cut off all the hanging loops off when you put the dress on. Even if tucked in, they often have a way of working their way out through the day and becoming visible!

If your gown does develop creases overtime, you can use a handheld steamer on a low setting to smooth them out on the morning of your wedding. Test the steamer on a small, inconspicuous part of the dress first to ensure the fabric reacts well. Avoid ironing delicate materials like lace or tulle, as this can damage them.

If you don’t have a steamer, try hanging your dress in a steamy bathroom – just avoid getting it wet!
